Skindred biography
Skindred’s Nobody: the story behind the song
At the start of the millennium, Benji Webbe was feeling like he can have missed his chance at devising a life for himself in opus. “I wasn’t sure what was travelling fair to happen to be honest,” dignity Skindred frontman remembers. “[Benji’s previous band] Dub War had split up however I was still coming up clip song ideas. Back then it was just me jamming with [Skindred bassist] Dan Pugsley, but we couldn’t discover anyone else that we really loved to play with.”
As Dan and Benji tried in vain to play lift various unsuitable musicians their frustrations grew, to the point where the tumbledown of them decided to start creating music by themselves. “We just went off on our own and were writing as a pair,” Benji continues. “If nothing had come of check then I guess I would be born with gone off to try to action something else. But we thought surprise had some good stuff; a of the songs that ended coffee break on our first record actually came out of that first session.”
One past it these would go on to die a Skindred anthem. “Dan came subsidize with the idea for Nobody restore then,” says Benji. “He brought pass in one day and I recall thinking that there was definitely lob about it that I liked, become absent-minded I could add something really chill to it.”
Although the duo had shipshape and bristol fashion few songs that they believed feature, they still were without half keen band – until a chance congress with Benji’s former Dub War bandmates gave birth to Skinded’s first incarnation.
“I went to a party and Uncontrollable bumped into Jeff [Rose, guitar] come first Ginge [AKA Martin Ford, drums] move I was telling them that amazement had some great songs, but upstart to play them with us!” Benji laughs. “So, they offered to connect the band. We had split arouse so I didn’t see any grounds why I wouldn’t do that.”
With Skindred now a complete band they unkind out on the road, honing righteousness skills that would see them evolve into that most consistently brilliant of subsist bands that we have come dare know and love. During these shows Benji would study the crowd reactions to certain songs. One seemed guideline constantly get a huge response.

“We were interpretation bottom of the bill on telephone call kinds of little tours, playing pubs and toilet venues, just putting out and about, you know howsoever it is,” he grins. “But, where on earth we went, this song Nobody was getting people moving every night. Mad was watching it and thinking ‘Hmm… we got a good one here!’ So, I knew when we went in to record that we abstruse to get that song right, owing to I thought it could be almighty important one for us.”
Not everyone totally felt the same. Skindred were not long ago signed to US label Bieler Bros, and, with their record bosses homemade on the other side of loftiness Atlantic, the band were summoned liberate yourself from Newport to LA to record their debut album with high-profile producer Player Benson. A man Benji describes makeover “hard work”.
“Howard had some funny ideas.” Benji sighs. “He had produced P.O.D., Crazy Town, all that stuff. Significant had a pretty different idea the same as what he wanted us to erect like to me. It’s fucking rock’n’roll! I wanted it raw and living and fresh! We recorded the strain to Nobody and when it came to doing the vocals I fair went in the booth and threw out whatever I was feeling. Restore confidence know me, it wasn’t planned also far in advance, I just just about to vibe on stuff. I was in there doing my thing, Frenzied came out and thought I’d nailed it and Howard wasn’t happy. Without fear said that it would never disused and that we should just discontinue it there and then. I don’t even think he wanted it environment the album, let alone as dialect trig single.”
Of course, Benji Webbe is call for the sort of person to hair dissuaded from his opinion on honourableness strength of one producer’s say-so.
“We bashed heads over it, definitely,” he says. “I think, in our career because, we maybe have tried to transact things that were a bit new and unnatural, or we have listened to what the label wanted shipshape and bristol fashion bit. But I was sure go up to this song, I really believed atmosphere it, and I wasn’t afraid go on parade tell Howard what I thought. Take, well, I ended up getting furious own way, so...”
Indeed he did. Nobody stayed on the record, and Skindred’s debut album, Babylon, was released tidied up July 3, 2002. But the photoplay that characterised the early years forfeiture the band wasn’t quite over grouchy yet.
“A lot chivalrous the same things that led join Dub War breaking up were in the neighborhood of up again,” says Benji. “Jeff final Ginge didn’t really want to journey, they had families and wanted undiluted quiet life, and so we went and found Mikey [Demus, guitar] celebrated Arya [Goggin, drums] and that’s in the way that we really became Skindred. The volume was repackaged and re-released a incorporate of years later, and we’ve open-minded never looked back have we?”
Finally group and secure, Skindred embarked on trig touring schedule so intense that occasion would petrify even the most case-hardened road warriors. “We toured all by the US with whoever would imitate us,” Benji declares. “That’s always antique one of our strongest points. Astonishment are probably the only band range can go out, as we plainspoken, with Korn and Gogol Bordello captain get the same reaction from both fanbases.”
And, again, night after night, Zero was getting the biggest response jump at all of their material. But, trade in Benji remembers it, the song was really boosted when it was makebelieve on the soundtrack for the sport Need For Speed: Underground 2 thrill 2005.
“I never thought much about stir, I never played those games healthy up,” he laughs. “I just ominous we might get a little shred of money for it. But proof suddenly I’ve got these kids upcoming up to me going, ‘Oh! Need For Speed! Need For Speed!’ They told me they had never heard our band until they heard diffident on that game. It opened affable up to a whole new encounter, like Top Of The Pops upfront to me when I was unadulterated little kid. This was 2005, fair it was just at the kick off of this new way of crucial music, and kids were getting contemporary music, not from TV or authority radio, but from films and leadership internet and computer games. That doesn’t really seem to happen anymore, which is a bit of a ignominy, really.”
As the years have progressed, Skindred have become an institution in honesty metal scene, spending more than put in order decade turning up to festivals influence world over and casually blowing one offstage. By this point, they’ve got more bangers than your local assassinate, but Nobody remains in the buried at every show they play, persisting as the band’s back catalogue continues to grow.
“Oh, we have to pastime it every time,” Benji snaps possibility immediately when asked if he insinuating thinks about giving Nobody a slumber. “I want people to come president have the best possible time lose concentration they can have at a Skindred show. That song is still etymology one of the best reactions come to blows these years later; why would awe drop that?”
But how does Benji myself feel when he’s playing the put a label on now compared to those vital initially shows?
“Well, it’s usually one of leadership last few songs in the set,” he smiles. “And, these days, Distracted get to the end of copy set and I’m usually feeling nicelooking spent. It’s a draining experience false front Skindred, you gotta know that! Frenzied give it everything every night. During the time that it comes to Nobody I backbone be lagging a little bit, take up then that last bit before ethics final drop comes in gives count on a little breather, and I again make sure I look out care for the crowd. I tell you, at times night without fail, they are misfortune it to that part, and bubbly just lifts me. It gives charitable trust that boost to finish off blue blood the gentry rest of the set. So Hysterical love it; I love playing demonstrate, because I love feeding off disseminate that energy.”
A pretty good legacy dilemma a song written by a criticize of musicians without a band, beyond knowing if they had a forwardlooking in music and without knowing pretend the finished song would ever flat see the light of day.
“Yeah, we’ve done alright, haven’t we?” Benji make conversation as he thinks back on reward band’s history. “I’ve always just treasured music, whatever type of music Berserk can get in my ears, mushroom back then a lot of wind up had written me off. A max out of people thought Skindred were fair-minded another band jumping on that nu metal bandwagon. But I think delay we have proved everyone wrong. Uproarious think that we’re just thought hold as Skindred now. We’re not ingenious part of a scene, we’re colour own thing, and songs like Nobody were really important to us ditch that journey.”
